April 4, – Sad News

It is with sadness that I share news of the passing of our former colleague Glynn Jones on April 3.

Glynn was a teacher at the college in what is now the School of Skilled Trades, Apprenticeship & Renewable Technology (START) at the Whitby campus. He retired in 2007, after being with the college for more than ten years. Working as a millwright in both England and Canada, Glynn was a hard worker who was committed to the success of his students and dedicated to his craft. During his time with the college, he positively influenced the lives of his many colleagues and the young apprentices he taught through his helpful nature and readiness to share his knowledge and vast experience.

A private family interment will take place at a later date in Huyton Church, Huyton, Liverpool, England. In memory of Glynn, a tree will be planted in the Beckett-Glaves Memorial Forest near Brantford, Ontario.

Our thoughts are with Glynn’s family and friends at this time.

March 8, 2018 – Sad News

This message is being sent on behalf of Don Lovisa, president, Durham College.

Dear colleagues,

It is with a very heavy heart that I share news of the sudden passing of our colleague, Terry Rigby, on March 7.

For nearly a decade, Terry has been a dedicated and passionate educator at the college, fondly considered a jack-of-all trades who was always willing to jump in to help others. He will be remembered for his warmth and how he continually went above and beyond to support students and colleagues alike.

Terry was a proud Durham College graduate of the Chemical Engineering program. He joined the college as an employee in 2009, starting as a laboratory technologist with what was then known as the School of Applied Sciences and Technology (now the School of Science and Engineering Technology) and eventually going on to also teach a variety of science-related courses. Most recently, he was a laboratory field technologist with the Centre for Food.

At this time, funeral arrangements are not known, but we will share them as soon as information becomes available.

Terry will be dearly missed by many. In honour of his life, flags at the Oshawa and Whitby campuses will be lowered later today and will remain lowered until the same time tomorrow.

Our thoughts are with Terry’s family and friends at this time.

February 24, 2018 – Sad News

Dear colleagues,
It is with sadness that I share news of the passing of our former colleague Everett “Ev” McCrimmon on February 19.
Ev taught Public Relations at the college in the School of Media, Art & Design, and is being warmly remembered for living a long, rich and full life marked by strong family relationships, wonderful friendships, love, storytelling, laughter, generosity, gentleness, humour and thoughtfulness.
A celebration of Ev’s life will be held in Picton in the summer, with a date to be announced closer to that time.
Ev was a firm believer in the power and benefits of learning. As such, in lieu of flowers, donations to Reaching for Rainbows in his memory are being encouraged.
Our thoughts are with Ev’s family and friends at this time.

January 11, 2018 – Sad News

Dear colleagues,

It is with great sadness that I share the news of the passing of retiree Linda Campbell. Linda was dedicated to Durham College (DC) for more than 15 years prior to retiring in 2010. She provided career and employment support to students daily at the Oshawa and Whitby campuses as an employment advisor with the Hired Career Services team. Before retiring, she was the UOIT internship co-ordinator, where she was instrumental in assisting UOIT students helping them successfully establish placements in their chosen fields.

The DC community will fondly remember Linda and her commitment to students, her colleagues and the college. Her kindness, positive attitude and calm, supportive nature will be missed by many. Our thoughts and prayers are with Linda’s family and friends at this difficult time.

A private ceremony was held last week for family and Celebration of Life will be held in early April for family, friends and former colleagues. We will share details as soon as they are available.

For those interested, in lieu of sending flowers, a donation can be made in Linda’s name to Brockville and District Hospice Palliative Care Services or the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society of Canada.

September 18, 2017 – Retirees Golf Day

The annual retirees’ golf day was held at the Salem Ridge golf course at the Deer Creek Academy on September 12th.  This is the 13th year the golf day has been held, 21 retirees attended.
If you are planning an event for September, choose the 2nd Tuesday, it is always a spectacular weather day, sunny skies and pleasant temperature. This year was the 13th spectacular day.
Everyone enjoyed the golf and the BBQ after.  After all the calculations were done the winners of the Bert DeJeet Memorial Trophy were Cheryl Ball for the ladies and Jim Anderson for the men.  Bert’s wife Liesje was on hand to present the trophy, photo attached.  Group photo also attached.
The golf day is held the 2nd Tuesday in September, played on a very easy golf course. Join us next year!
Many Thanks to Annabel and Jim Anderson for once again organizing this event.

Dear colleagues,

It is with great sadness that I share the news of the passing of recent retiree Susan Sproul, former dean of the School of Health & Community Services (SHCS), today, Wednesday, September 13.
